I chose Wichita because the youth there do not have many options to express themselves. I remember what it was like going to high school there and was always disappointed by their lack of extra-curricular activities. I was shocked when the research showed that Wichita has such a high percentage (71%) of white people. I grew up in a neighborhood where I was the minority and constantly surrounded by people of different ethnicity. This research made me realize that Wichita is segregated by socioeconomic class and race more than I ever thought. This non-profit was created to make a safe space for people to be empowered and united with others in their own community that they may not have the opportunity to meet otherwise. The vision was to unite people of all backgrounds including both class and race.

There are 17,875 women from the ages 15-21 that could be influenced by my non-profit and an extra 8,823 women ages 22-24 that could be mentors. Middle aged women are also welcomed to come to the community events or be mentors. It is very hard for a person who comes from a lower class to have the connections needed to get a job. The mentoring program will help connect them with an industry professional to help them with their professional skills.

Why Wichita?

Tulsa, Oklahoma is a similar size and demographic. I was surprised that Tulsa has a larger Black community than Wichita but Tulsa is extremely segregated by rich and poor neighborhoods. There is work being done with racial reconciliation where white couples are moving to North Tulsa to bridge the gap. However, this is becoming more harmful than helpful. Because of so many white people moving into these neighborhoods, they are becoming more trendy, making it more expensive to live there. This is pushing Black people further away.
